Motive’s largest refuelling station at Tyseley, Birmingham started refuelling buses for the first time today. The site which will be fully opened early 2022 has welcomed drivers from National Express as they train on the new zero emission double decker buses on behalf of Birmingham City Council.

The site at Tyseley is the model for Motive’s next generation of refuelling stations which will deliver green hydrogen for HGVs and buses as they decarbonise. The station which has been open for cars since early this year was funded through a combination of Motive investment, EU and UK Government funding. The site demonstrates how zero carbon infrastructure can be built for a dedicated fleet, without capital investment by the fleet operator.

Duncan Yellen, Managing Director of Motive said “This milestone is a great step forward in decarbonising Birmingham’s bus fleet and is a result of the work by Motive, National Express, Birmingham City Council and the other project partners. The site at Tyseley is the first in the UK to generate green hydrogen on site for heavy vehicles and shows how we can efficiently deliver zero carbon fuel for fleets.”

Motive are working with a number of fleet operators to build out more refuelling stations in 2022 and are actively seeking to operators interested in working with us to deliver hydrogen refuelling at their sites and decarbonise their fleets.

The station at Tyseley was funded in part by UK Government's Hydrogen Technology Partnership, EU's MEHRLIN and H2ME2 programmes and the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership
